"We are observing an unknown target" - The Pentagon opened the UFO files - Decades of unexplained sightings revealed

The files include reports, photographs, audio recordings, and videos from the late 1940s to the present day.

The US Department of Defense has released an extensive archive of declassified documents covering decades of reports on UFOs or, as they are now officially called, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). The files include reports, photographs, audio recordings, and videos from the late 1940s to the present day. Despite the popular connection of UFOs with aliens and flying saucers, most incidents recorded in the archive are characterized simply as unexplained, without any evidence of extraterrestrial activity.

The mystery of Gemini 7

One of the most famous cases involves NASA's Gemini 7 mission in December 1965. Astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell reported to Mission Control that they were observing an "unknown target" near their spacecraft, just minutes after entering orbit. The two astronauts clarified that it was not the discarded rocket stage nor the debris floating around them. Although the incident was recorded in the mission's official communications, a definitive explanation was never provided.upload-photo_2026-07-01-10.43-pic4_zoom-1500x1500-61232.jpg

Strange phenomena over nuclear facilities

Of even greater interest are the reports from the Sandia Base in New Mexico, where between 1948 and 1950, glowing green spheres and "fireballs" were repeatedly recorded near nuclear weapons development facilities. Scientists attempted to collect atmospheric particles, identifying traces of copper, cobalt, and nickel. However, no scientific investigation managed to explain why the phenomena appeared for months in the same area, executing maneuvers that did not match the behavior of natural meteors. The case reached the Strategic Air Command, which dispatched a special committee to determine if there was a potential threat to the US nuclear program. Despite the extensive investigation, the phenomenon remained unexplained.upload-photo_2026-07-01-10.43-pic_32ratio_600x400-600x400-77688.jpg

Strange reports from police officers and military personnel

The archive includes dozens of other incidents involving credible witnesses. In 1950, four police officers in Philadelphia recorded an object that initially resembled a parachute, but when they approached it, it dissolved, leaving behind only a glowing purple mist before completely vanishing. Two years later, workers at a plutonium plant on the Savannah River reported the appearance of a glowing disc-shaped object. The information reached then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who forwarded the case to the US Air Force, deeming that it did not fall under the FBI's jurisdiction.

The most famous prank in space

A few days after the Gemini 7 incident, one of the most famous moments in the history of space exploration took place. During the rendezvous of Gemini 6 with Gemini 7, astronaut Walter Schirra radioed in to report an unknown object approaching from a polar orbit. A few seconds later, his colleagues heard the melody of "Jingle Bells" over the radio, which Schirra was playing on a small harmonica and sleigh bells he had smuggled into the spacecraft. The Christmas prank featured Santa Claus as the main subject and remains to this day one of the most iconic moments of humor in NASA history.

No evidence of aliens

Despite the volume of declassified documents, the Pentagon emphasizes that none of the incidents constitute evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial life. These are records of phenomena that could not be explained using the available data of the era. In several cases, it is likely they were natural phenomena, experimental military technologies, or erroneous observer assessments, while certain files continue to remain open to this day.
